Craniofacial Unit at Alder Hey Children`s Hospital
Plagiocephaly Research:

SleepCurve is pleased to have worked with the Craniofacial Unit at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital between 2008 and 2010 to formally evaluate the effectiveness of the SleepCurve mattress. The results, which confirm that the SleepCurve mattress is an effective method of treating positional plagiocephaly, were announced at the BAOMS Conference at Nice, and are being disseminated as a significant finding in medical journals in the coming months. Abstract, SleepCurve Mattress

Object:

To evaluate the effectiveness of the Sleepcurve® mattress for the management of patients referred to our unit with positional plagiocephaly(PP).

Method:

A consecutive case series presenting for treatment with PP had anthropometric head measurements recorded to obtain a cranial vault asymmetry(CVA). They were offered a Sleepcurve mattress and were followed up 6 months later with repeat measurements. This was compared with an historical control group who had been treated with repositioning therapy only.

Results:

There were 40 consecutive patients in the mattress group and 16 in the repositioning group. The mattress group had a mean age of 4.5 months and 17mm CVA. The mean follow up time was 6 months. At the end of the observation period all bar 1 patient had improvement in plagiocephaly and a mean CVA of 5mm. The repositioning group had mean age of 5.5months and a CVA of 15mm at the start of the observation period which worsened to 18mm at the completion of the observation period.

Conclusion:

In this study the Sleepcurve® mattress was an effective low cost treatment for positional plagiocephaly which avoids many of the compliance issues associated with other treatments. Repositioning therapy needs further investigation as our group although small worsened during the observation period.
